Fighting a civil war and relentless new enemies over the ruins of their lost empire the Old Alliance is broken.
Once the only true superpower, now a fractured mess of warring tyrants, the Old Alliance united the various mining cities under one monarch and one parliament. Their vast armies kept all other powers at bay and dominated the sparkstone supply. After they created the first battle mech, rendering all normal forces redundant, they bankrupted themselves trying to build as many as possible to keep up with their enemies’ own production.
With a destroyed economy and an overabundance of superweapons the old alliance erupted into civil war and anarchy, where the only real power rests with the tyrants that rule each of the mechromancer cohorts. There are three main allegiances: those who serve the monarch, those who want a full republic and those who want to serve the New-Model-God, a magic-powered mechanical mind of immense intellect and foresight.
Whichever faction a mechromancer cohort claims to fight for, it is often just a flag of convenience as the real prize is the sparkstone mines and holding onto as much of that arcane energy as possible. In their colossal battlemechs they stride forth, like the knights of old, to duel over the lands they claim; belching acrid smoke from their exhausts and crippling their enemies with each cannon blast. Who cares who rules over the ashes of the old alliance as long as the sparkstone burns bright!
